Ume Plum Blossom Viewing

Ume (Asian plums) blossoms can be viewed from late January to March in Honshu region, Japan. White or pink ume blossoms are beautiful in gardens, parks, shrines and temples, and more. Many places hold ume matsuri (plum blossom festivals). Below is a list of popular spots for viewing plum blossoms.

Atami Baien Ume Matsuri

Period: January 8 - March 6, 2011
Location: Atami Baien (Plum Garden)
Atami-city, Shizuoka
Access: Take a walk from JR Ito Line Kinomiya Station or take a bus from JR Atami Station to Baien-mae Bus Stop.

Odawara Plum Festival

Period: January 29 - February 28, 2011
Location: Soga Bairin Odawara-city, Kanagawa
Access: JR Shimosoga Station
Soga Bairin consists of some plum tree gardens.

Kitano Tenmangu Shrine

Location: Kyoto-city, Kyoto
Access: Kyoto City Bus Kitano Tenmangu-mae Stop
The shrine usually opens its plum garden to the public from early February to late March.

Yoshino Baigou Ume Matsuri

Period: February 19 - March 31, 2011
Location: Oume-city, Tokyo
Access: JR Oume Line Hinatawada Station and Futamatao Station
Yoshino Baigou is the area from the Hinatawada Station to the Futamatao Station where many plum trees are planted.

Mito Kairaku-en

Location: Mito-city, Ibaraki
Access: Take a bus from JR Joban Line Mito Station to Kairakuen-iriguchi Bus Stop.
Mito Kairakuen is known as one the three greatest gardens in Japan.

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

Location: Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine Dazaifu-city, Fukuoka
Access: Nishi Nihon Testudo Train Dazaifu Station
There are thousands of plum trees in the shrine.

Yushima Tenmangu Shrine

Location: 3-30-1 Yushima Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo
Access: Tokyo Subway Yushima Station
