Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival is a traditional ritual of Kushida Shrine located in Hakata-ku. Yamakasa are large floats, and men carry floats on their shoulders and run through the streets. It's said that the origin of this festival is attributed to the ritual took place to stop a bad plague spread through Hakata in 1241.

From July 1st to 14th, gorgeous floats called kazari-yamakasa are exhibited in various places, including Fukuoka Dome and Kushida Shrine. Also carried floats are seen on the streets from July 10th to 15th. The highlight of the festival is the final race of floats called oiyama on the 15th. The first team starts to run, carrying the floats at 4:59 a.m. The summer of Fukuoka-city begins with this exciting festival.
