Tsukimi - Moon Viewing Events
Japanese Moon Festival

Tsukimi is a Japanese custom to view the moon on the night of August 15th in the lunar calendar. Traditionally, tsukimi dango (Japanese dumplings) and Japanese sake are placed on a tray and susuki (pampas grass) are arranged in a vase. People view the moon quietly at home, parks, shrines, temples, and so on. For those of you who want to experience Japanese moon viewing, here are some events to visit.

1. Daikakuji Meigetsu Kangensai (Moon Viewing Evening)

Place: Daikakuji Temple Osawaike Pond Area

Date: October 2-4, 2009
Time: 5 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Admission: 500 yen for adults

Visitors can view the moon from the tea house, the special moon viewing stage, or the dragon boat on the Osawaike Pond. Additional fees are required for boat rides and so on.

2. Mukojima Hyakkaen Moon Viewing

Place: Mokojima Hyakkaen 3-18-3 Mukojima Sumida-ku, Tokyo
Access: Tobu Isezaki Line Higashi-mukojima Station / Keisei Line Keisei hikifune Station

Moon viewing special tea ceremonies are held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. during this time. An additional fee is required for participating in a tea ceremony.

3. Hie Shrine Chushu Kangensai (Moon Viewing Music Festival)

Place: Hie Shrine Jinja Inner Garden

Access: Tokyo Subway Tameike-sanno Station/Akasaka-mitsuke Station/Kokkaigijido-mae Station

It's a ceremony takes place at Hie Shrine which is known as its Sanno Festival. Traditional Japanese court music and dance are performed.

4. Sankeien Kangetsukai (Moon Viewing)

Place: Yokohama Sankeien Garden

Dates: October 2-6, 2009
Time: - 9 p.m. (enter until 8:30 p.m.)
Admission: 500 yen for adults (middle school age children and over) / 300 yen for seniors age 65 years old and over / 200 yen for elementary school children

The three tier pagoda and ancient architectures are lit up at night. Traditional Japanese music performances are held.

5. Kamokangetsusai (Kamo Moon Viewing Festival)

Place: Kamigamojinja Shrine

Tsukimi dango dumplings and Japanese sake are provided to the first 300 visitors. Shinto rituals and events are held under the moonlight.

6. Yasaka Shrine Kangetsusai (Moon Viewing Festival)

Place: Yasaka Shrine Buden Hall

  At the Buden Hall, Shinto rituals, Japanese poem reading, and traditional Japanese music performances are held.

7. Shimogamo Jinja Meigetsukangensai (Moon Viewing Music Festival)

Place: Shimogamojinja Shrine

After the Shinto rituals, the ancient court music and dances are performed. Also, tea ceremonies are held.

8. Misono Koen Moon Viewing

Place: Misono Koen Yokomizoyashiki

Date: October 3, 2009 (in case of rains, the event will be postponed to the next day)

Yokomizo Yashiki is a house of Yokomizo Family which was prospered from the 15th century. As a tsukimi event, 600 candles are set in bamboos and lit at night.

9. Hirano Jinja Meigetsusai (Moon Viewing Festival)

Place: Hiranojinja Shrine
Hiranomiyamoto-cho Kita-ku, Kyoto-city

After the Shinto rituals, traditional Japanese music and dances are preformed. Japanese macha green tea is served to visitors, with a price of 500 yen.
