Osaka Tenmangu enshrines deified Michizane Sugawara, Tenjin. With a history of over 1,000 years, Osaka Tenjin Festival is known as one of the three greatest festivals in Japan alongside Kyoto Gion Matsuri and Tokyo Kanda Matsuri. It attracts more than a million visitors every year.

A series of Tenjin Festival rituals and events are held from the end of June for about a month. The highlights of the festival are Yoimiya-sai on July 24th and Honmiya-sai on July 25th.

In the morning of July 24, a ritual called Hokonagashi Shinji is held to pray for the success of the festival. A wooden kamihoko is released into the Dojima River from a small boat at Hokonagashi-bashi (bridge). In the evening, Ujiko Junkou (taiko performances and dragon dance) takes place in parish areas.

On July 25, two kinds of processions are held. One is called Rikutogyo which takes place on city streets. About 3,000 participants dressed in historical costumes walk about 4km from Osaka Tenmangu Shrine to Midosuji street, then to Tenjinbashi Bridge. The other is called Funatogyo. It's a procession of about 100 boats through the Okawa River. It starts from Tenjinbashi Bridge around 6 p.m. Around 7 p.m to 9 p.m., Suito-sai Hono Hanabi (fireworks display) takes place along Okawa River near Sakuranomiya Park and Kawasaki Park.
