Japan's ancient capital called Heijo-kyo was located in Nara in the 8th century. Nara is full of historical landmarks, including many UNESCO World Heritage sites. It's located east of Osaka-city and south of Kyoto-city and is easily accessible from both cities.

Nara National Museum

Address: 50 Noborioji-cho Nara-city, Nara
Access: By bus from Kintetsu or JR Nara Station to Himuro Jinja/Kokuritsu Hakubutsukan stop, or 15 minute walk from Kintetsu Line Nara Station

Horyuji Temple

The five-story pagoda is known as one of the oldest wooden buildings in the world.
Location: 1-1 Horyuji Sannai Ikaruga-cho Ikoma-gun, Nara
Access: By bus to Horyuji-mae stop from JR Horyuji Station, or 20 minute walk from JR Horyuji Station

Kofukuji Temple

It's located by the famous Sarusawaike pond. The main building here is the 50m high five-story pagoda.

Kasuga Taisha

There are about 3,000 hanging and stone lanterns in the shrine.
Location: 160 Kasugano-cho Nara-city, Nara

Toshodaiji Temple

It's founded in the 8th century by a Chinese priest named Ganjin.
Location: 13-46 Gojo-cho Nara-city, Nara
Access: 7 minute walk from Kintetsu Nishinokyo Station

Hokiji Temple

The temple's pagoda is said to be the oldest three-story pagoda in Japan.
Location: 1873 Okamoto Ikaruga-cho, Nara

Yakushiji Temple

There are two pagodas in this temple.
Location: 457 Nishinokyo-cho Nara-city, Nara

Todaiji Temple

This temple located in Nara park is well known for its Great Buddha statue, which is a symbol of Nara.
Location: 406-1 Zoshicho Nara-city, Nara
Access: About 20 minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station

Wakakusayamayaki

It's grass-burning on Mt. Wakakusa which is a traditional winter ceremony in Nara.
