Hakone is located at the foot of Mount Fuji in Kanagawa prefecture. It belongs to the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and is a popular tourist destination with easy access from Tokyo.

Lake Ashi

Lake Ashi, which was created by a volcanic eruption about 3,000 years ago, has a perimeter of about 19 km. Mt. Fuji can be viewed on clear days.
Lake Cruises:
  • Izu Hakone Railway Ashinoko Yuransen Boats
    - travel between Kojiri Port, Hakone-en Port, Moto-Hakone Port, and Hakone Sekisho Checkpoint Port.
  • Hakone Kankosen Pirate Boats
    - travel between Togendai Port, Moto-hakone Port, and Hakone-machi Port.
  • Hakone Tozan Railway

    Hakone Tozan Railway is a mountain railway which connects between Odawara Station and Gora Station through Hakone Yumoto Station, and other stations. Passengers can enjoy spectacular mountain scenery, especially during fall foliage and ajisai hydrangea seasons.

    Hakone Ropeway

    It connects Sounzan, Owakudani, Ubako and Togendai. The Hakone Tozan Cable Car links from Gora to Sounzan.

    Owakudani Valley

    Owakudani Valley was created by the eruption of Mt. Kamiyama about 3,000 years ago. You see the rising steam coming from the ground. Black boiled eggs called kuro-tamago are very popular food to eat here.
    Access: Hakone Ropeway Owakudani Station

    Hakone Sekisho Checkpoint

    It was a checkpoint on the Tokaido Road during the Edo period. Some of the building have been reconstructed.
    Location: 1 Hakone Hakone-town
    Access: 3 minute walk from Sekisho-ato bus stop.
    Admission: 500 yen (adults - ) 250 yen (elementary age children)
    Open: 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. / 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (Dec.-Feb.)

    Hakone Open Air Museum

    Hakone Open Air Museum opened in 1969 as the first open-air museum in Japan. It's the most popular museum in Hakone.
    Location: 1121 Ninotaira Hakone-town
    Access: Hakone Tozan Railway Chokoku-no-mori Station
    Hours: 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.
    Admission: 1,600 yen (adults), 1,100 yen (seniors age 65- , college and high school students), 800 yen (middle and elementary students)

    Onshi Hakone Koen Park

    This large park is located on the south shore of Lake Ashi. It used to be the Emperor Meiji's detached palace garden. The view of Lake Ashi from the balcony of the observation building is breathtaking.
    Location: 171 Moto-Hakone, Hakone-town
    Access: Onshi Hakone Koen-mae Bus Stop

    Hakone Shrine

    Hakone Shrine located near the Moto-Hakone Port was built in 757. The red trii gate on Lake Ashi is one of the gates of this shrine.
    Location: 80-1 Moto-Hakone Hakone-town
    Access: 10 minute walk from Moto-Hakone bus stop.

    Sengokuhara

    Sengokuhara is an onsen hot springs area located northern part of Hakone-town and is surrounded by mountains. It takes about 30 minutes by Hakone Tozan bus from Hakone Yumoto Station to Sengokuhara Onsen. Many museums are located in this area, and beautiful views of Japanese susuki grass fields attract lots of visitors in autumn. There are about 1700 varieties of plants at the Hakone Shisseikaen (Botanical Garden of Wetlands).

    Hakone Kowakien Yunessun

    It's a fun spa resort located in Kowakudani.
    Location: 1297 Ninotaira Hakone-town
    Access: It takes about 20 minutes by Izu-Hakone bus or Hakone Tozan bus from Hakone Yumoto Station to Kowakien bus stop. Or, takes 20 minutes by walk from Hakone Tozan Railway Kowakudani Station.
