Kawazu cherry blossoms (Prunus lannesiana Wils. cv. Kawazu-zakura) are known as one of the earliest cherry blossoms in Honshu region, Japan. They are different from Somei Yoshino, the most common kind of sakura in Japan. Kawazu cherry blossoms are pink and last longer in full bloom than Somei Yoshino do. It's said that predicting the flowering time of Kawazu cherry blossoms is difficult, and they might begin to bloom in January. Typically, Kawazu cherry blossom festival is held from early February to early March. During the festival, more than one million people visit the town to see the pink cherry blossoms. Cherry trees are lined along the Kawazu River, and the blossoms are illuminated at night during the festival.
