Sapporo is the capital city of Hokkaido, the northernmost prefecture of Japan. It's located in southern Hokkaido.
The city is well-known for its Sapporo Snow Festival which attracts millions of visitors.
If you aren't interested in snow, summer is the best time to visit Hokkaido when other parts of Japan are hot and humid. It's cooler than other regions of Japan. According to the 30 year normals (1981-2010) by Japan Meteorological Agency, the average yearly temperatures for Sapporo is 8.9 degrees C.

Access to Sapporo:
From Shin-chitose Airport, it takes about 40 minutes by JR rapid train to JR Sapporo Station. Or it takes about 75 minutes by bus from the airport to the center of Sapporo-city.
The Hokutosei and Cassiopeia trains run between JR Sapporo Station and Ueno Station in 16-17 hours. The Twilight Express train runs between JR Osaka and Sapporo Station in about 22 hours.
Ferry services are operated between Oarai and Tomakomai by the MOL Ferry, between Nagoya, Sendai, and Tomakomai by the Taiheiyo Ferry, between Niigata, Tsuruga, or Maizuru and Otaru or Tomakomai by the Shin Nihonkai Ferry.
