Hiroshima is located about 230 miles west of Kyoto and on the Seto Sea side in Chugoku region, Japan. Hiroshima is known as the city destroyed by an atomic bomb in 1945. The Peace Memorial Ceremony is held on August 6 in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park every year. After the bombing, Hiroshima was reconstructed as a modern, big city. It's an interesting city to visit. If you take a bullet train, it takes about 4 hours from Tokyo and takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes from Kyoto to Hiroshima.

Miyajima Island

Miyajima Island (Itsukushima) in the Seto Sea is a popular tourist destination in Hiroshima prefecture. Miyajima is one of the Japan's most scenic sights. It's well-known for a large red torii gate rising up from the ocean. The gate guards Itsukushima Shrine. To give birth, to die, or to be buried were forbidden on the island, and there are still no hospitals or cemeteries on the island.
Access:
It takes about 25 minutes from JR Hiroshima Station to Miyajima-guchi by by a local train. Take a ferry from the Miyajima-guchi Piar to the Miyajima Pier. It takes 10 minutes.

Miyajima Tourist Spots:

  • Itsukushima Shrine (1-1 Miyajima-cho Hatsukaichi-city, Hiroshima)
This shrine is inscribed on the UNESCO's World Heritage List. You see the Itsukushima Shrine's red torii from the ferry to Miyajima on the water. After the previous torii was destroyed, the present one was built in 1875. The diameter of a pole is about 13 feet and the height of the torii is about 52 feet. The shrine was founded in the 6th century, and one of Japan's most powerful men, Taira no Kiyomori, rebuilt the shrine in 12th century. The shrine appears to be floating at high tide. Walking on the walkways between the buildings is an interesting experience. There is the Japan's oldest Noh theater in the shrine. Also, bugaku (ancient music and dance), which was introduced to Miyajima by Kiyomori, is staged.

  • Mt. Misen (1,739 ft.)
You can go to the peak of the mountain by a ropeway. The view of the Seto Sea from there is wonderful.

  • Momiji-dani Koen (Japanese Maple Valley Park)
There are about 200 Japanese maple trees in the park. It's a great place to view red and orange Japanese maple leaves in autumn. The best season is usually early to mid. November.
