Eel and Tofu

By Shizuko Mishima, About.com

How to eat cold soba noodles:

Cold soba is also eaten by dipping in soy sauce based cold soup, soba-tsuyu. Common side ingredients are seaweed, green onion, and wasabi. If you are eating noodles with wasabi, the best way to do it is to put a little dab of wasabi on the side of your bowl, dip the noodles in the soup, then drag the noodles up through the wasabi. Yum! You are allowed to make slurping sounds while eating noodles this way - it tastes better, too. Just be careful if you're wearing a white shirt!

There are foods which are often eaten during the hot time other than cold noodles.

Unagi (eel)

Grilled eel is said to give stamina to people during the hot time and is eaten often. Grilled eel with teriyaki sauce is called kabayaki, and dishes which offer kabayaki on top of rice are popular. Japanese Eel Dishes are explained here.

Hiya-yakko

This is the simplest way of eating tofu. Just chill tofu and eat with soy sauce. Hiya-yakko is usually served with side ingredient such as karashi (Japanese mustard), grated ginger, and green onion. Japanese tofu description and hiyayakko recipe are here.

Do any of these dishes sound good to you?  Please try some of them when the heat has taken away your appetite for other foods. Enjoy!
