Hatsumoude

From Shizuko Mishima, About.com GuideDecember 25, 2010

Hatsumoude means the first visit to a temple or shrine in the year. It is a traditional thing to do during New Year's holidays in Japan, and well-known shrines and temples around the country are crowed with people. After praying at temples and shrines, many people buy omamori (traditional Japanese charms) and enjoy drawing omikuji fortunes.
