Kyoto Gozan Okuribi Bonfire

You might be spending obon in Japan this week. Five large bonfires are lit on the slopes of five mountains which surround Kyoto-city on the night of August 16th. It's a well-known summer event in Kyoto and is worth visiting. It's said that the bonfires are lit to send the spirits of ancestors back at the end of obon.
