First Swine Flu Cases Confirmed in Japan
Saturday May 9, 2009
Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare announced that three Japanese were confirmed to be infected with the new swine flu virus (H1N1 flu) on May 9. They are the first confirmed cases of the new flu in Japan. The patients had been staying in Oakville, Canada since late April and arrived at Narita International Airport from Detroit on May 8. It's reported that they have been isolated at Narita Red Cross Hospital and that their conditions are stable. Further, 49 people who were seated near the patients on the plane are staying at a hotel near the airport to be monitored for 10 days. Onboard quarantine inspections have been carried out on flights from the U.S. mainland, Canada, and Mexico at Japanese airports since April 28. Passengers fill out health questionnaires, and quarantine officers use thermal cameras to check passengers' temperatures. When you take a plane to Japan, please keep in mind that it takes longer time than usual to get off the plane now.
