Japan Itinerary - Any Suggestions?

Here is a person who is planning to visit Japan in late January. What do you think of the itinerary? "Is two days enough time to experience Kanazawa for one day and Takayama and Shirakawago and villages for one day? I want to take the train probably from Kyoto to Kanazawa and then along the sea coast to Toyama and on to Takayama (or the other way around) as I will then be going on to Tokyo or coming from Tokyo....only having 9 days and wanting to see so much is difficult. I really want to see Miyajima at one end and Nikko at the other, Kyoto, Nara, Tokyo and the Alpine region, travelling on a Japan Rail 7 day pass..."
Any Suggestions?
