Where to Stay...

One of our forum users asks, "Our son may be part of a high school band exchange with either Kogane or Matsudo High School near Tokyo next spring. Can anyone recommend a city to stay in that might compare in traditional sights to Kyoto but is north or east of Tokyo?" Suggestions?
