"I'm going to Japan this August and I was wondering if anyone who'd been an exchange student in Japan would like to suggest anything I should do..." Suggestions?

i am just warning you now,
be careful on exchange in japan,
i have been on exchange here for 9 months so far,
and my previous host family’s dad sexually harassed me for 5 months,
be aware that nobody cares about this, and they wont do anything about it.
japan has a great culture, but be aware of the downsides of it too!

I had a great experience as an exchange student in Osaka. I now have a full time job speaking japanese in USA. and visit japan once a year. Its unfortunate that the first comment on this post is negative, i personally dont believe it.

mark, it IS unfortunate that that girl or boy had a bad time in japan while they were on exchange. when youre ina strange country where even though you might have a good understanding of the language it is never going to be as good a native japanese person so they might have had a hard time getting out of being in the care of that host family. a few of my host fathers were innaproprate towards me and it was difficult for me to move families just becasue of the fact that i felt like by saying something it would be disrepecting the families and the peopl in charge of me would have never gone and ‘investigated’ for the same reasons. japanese people have their little ‘masks’ on around people who arent direct family. they rarely speak the truth if it will make them look bad or threaten someone elses reputation. the ranks of different people is frustrating, the only people who are your equal s are your peers (the people the same age as you)dont get involved with anyone and stand up for yourse;f!!!. japanese people are stubborn.
